Open and Affirming
"Christ has taught us to unconditionally love one another as I have loved you. This basic tenet summarizes the findings of the Open and Affirming Committee. The Community Church has a long history of answering Jesus' call to love and to stand for justice. As one of the first churches to welcome a female pastor in the late 1800's, to Civil Rights work in the mid 1900's, we now believe that it is fundamental to our Christian foundations in the late 1900's that we welcome those whose life situations have been condemned by society. We believe that all people are created in God's image and are part of the family of faith. We recognize and celebrate our differences, yet are made in the Spirit of Jesus Christ's love. We seek to follow the examples of Jesus and other faithful people believing that all our relationships are to be characterized by respect, honor, love and commitment. The Open and Affirming Committee, having studied the policy statement put forth by General Synod XV, now seeks to welcome fully all people regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, faith, nationality, ethnicity, marital status, physical disability, economic situation or whatever other barriers there might be."
Adopted in a Congregational Meeting, December, 2003
